Scottish Weaponry
Scottish Weaponry is a collection of stylised Scottish Weapons. The 3D models represent typical weapons used by Scottish warriors and soldiers from the early Stone Age period to the coming of the Scottish Enlightenment in the late 18th century.
The objective of the project is to provide 3D models of typical weapons used throughout history in Scotland. The selected models track the development of typical weapons such as the dirk, sword, pistol and musket, along with accessories such as the targe and powder horn.
The initial phase of the work undertook a review of military history, identifying the main weapons used by Scottish clans and armies. Specific types of weapon were identified from early descriptions and artefacts through to more modern personal arms. Examples were selected to contain a balance of military, personal and ornamental arms. Weapons connected to famous personalities are also of interest. Once selected, reference material including descriptions, dimensions and images was collated and used to develop the models.
The primary work involved the creation of high quality 3D models which can be used for generation of images and 3D world objects. The models have been constructed to provide a photo realistic representation of stylised reproduction weapons from the selected periods.
The models have been constructed to scale with functional features and ornamentation appropriate to the style and period of the weapon. A catalogue of appropriate materials was developed to represent local availability and craftsmanship. The weapons are represented in as-new condition rather than antique or aged to maintain a constant presentational standard.
The material contained in Scottishmist.com has been developed from several sources. Much of the material has been developed as part of the Resources for Learning project, funded by the New Opportunities Fund Digitisation Programme and supported by SCRAN. Some of the original material may still be available for viewing but will be retired when it has been fully updated.
For all the created models, a supporting text has been supplied describing the weapon, its features and historical context.
