Before heading over the Skye Bridge head east for a detour to see Eilean Donan Castle, rightly known as the most romantic castle in Scotland . Continue a few more miles up Glen Shiel to Loch Cluanie and return to see the spectacular Five Sisters mountain range from the best direction. For me this is the best hour you will spend driving in Scotland .

Skye may look small on the map but it is not possible to drive round in a couple of hours. Once over the bridge, head for Portree and a bit of the Island of Skye hospitality. If you have time, the northern loop round Uig is interesting and the Old Man of Storr a steep but rewarding climb.
